While many believe that the laser is responsible for removing tattoo ink from the skin, it is actually your immune system that does the removal. The laser breaks up the ink into small enough particles that the immune system can then absorb and flush away.
Because the immune system is responsible for removing shattered ink particles, anything you do to boost or hinder your immune system will have an impact on the results you will see from the laser tattoo removal process. Here are a few ways to improve your immune system’s response to laser tattoo removal treatments.
Drinking lots of fluids, especially water, forces your body to flush out toxins including tiny tattoo ink particles. Staying active keeps your immune system working in tip top shape. Taking vitamins can also have a positive impact on your immune system. A deep massage to the treated area daily (once the area is beginning to heal) will help increase blood flow to the area. This keeps the immune system active in the area and ready to remove more ink particles than it would without the increased blood flow. Keeping any blisters or scabs intact during the healing process helps to keep the immune system active and also helps to prevent infection and the potential for scarring.
It is also possible to decrease your immune system’s response to laser tattoo removal treatments. Some things to avoid or cut back on include anything that would weaken your immune system. It is not a good idea to undergo laser tattoo removal treatments while fighting off an infection. Even a simple cold can keep the immune system from being as active in the tattoo site as it would be under normal conditions. Drinking alcohol tends to thin the blood and counteract the immune system response. Smoking cigarettes lessens the body’s ability to flush out toxins, and according to research, can lessen the effectiveness of laser tattoo removal by up to 70%.
Getting fresh ink while undergoing laser tattoo removal treatments can slow the removal process as well. When you get a new tattoo, the immune system jumps in to try to remove the foreign ink particles. These new particles are too large for the immune system to absorb and flush away, but for several weeks to months after getting a tattoo, the immune system tries to remove the ink anyway. This limits the immune system’s ability to respond to the smaller shattered ink particles created by laser tattoo removal treatments.
Any time the immune system is busy working on another toxin in the body, it has less resources to allocate elsewhere. For this reason, to see the best results from your laser tattoo removal treatments, you should do all you can to boost your immune system and avoid anything that could potentially decrease the immune system’s resources. As always, if you ever have questions about your treatments or the results you are seeing, feel free to ask our laser specialists. We want to see you achieve the best results possible and want you to feel comfortable every step of the way.
Below are two ring finger tattoos both after 2 treatments at Vanish. One tattoo is massaged on a regular basis, while the other one is not massaged as often. Notice the drastic difference in the two results. Now as a disclaimer, every person and every tattoo is different, but the evidence strongly points to the benefits of massaging the treated area often.
Right now is a perfect time to start laser tattoo removal treatments!
If you have a specific date by which to have the ink removed, getting started with treatments as soon as possible is advised. For example, if you need your tattoo removed for a spring wedding, now is the perfect time to get started.
If you are extremely active in the summertime, now would be a great time for you to get started. Summer heat in North Texas is moving out, pools are closing, and daylight is shrinking. While being active will in no way hinder the removal process, it is important to protect the treated area from the sun as it will be more susceptible to burning. Also you will want to avoid soaking it in a swimming pool or such until the area is healed to prevent secondary infection.
If your tattoo is in an area where thick winter clothing could irritate it during the healing process, now is also the perfect time to get started. It’s cool enough that bandages won’t be so hot and bothersome. Also it’s still warm enough that bulky winter clothing has not made it out of storage yet. When the cold weather does decide to make its way into North Texas, you can always postpone treatment until warmer spring temperatures return.

Our Astanza Trinity laser system is not only effective in removing tattoos. It can also create more youthful looking skin. Most often these skin rejuvenation treatments are done on the face, but we can also treat the shoulders, backs of the hands, or tops of the feet.
For a skin rejuvenation treatment, we use a very low setting of our Q-switched Nd:YAG 1064nm laser to treat the entire area. This treatment causes just enough damage to the skin to cause it to turn over. Immediately after treatment, your skin will have a light pinkish glow and may feel slightly tighter. For the first 24-48 hours, we recommend wearing no make-up; however a mild moisturizer and sun screen is permitted and encouraged.
As mentioned previously, the laser treatment causes the skin to turn over at a more rapid pace than normal. This allows for new, younger skin to replace the older skin. Also the immune system gets activated to push out impurities and help decrease the appearance of pores. Laser skin rejuvenation also helps to increase collagen production which can improve the elasticity of the skin.
All of these benefits are possible with laser skin rejuvenation treatments; however it is important to note that the differences in the skin’s appearance after one treatment will be subtle. As we are, all too often, our own worst critics, especially when it comes to our skin, it may be hard for us to notice the changes ourselves. Often times our clients will state that while they didn’t notice much difference, their friends have made comments that “something is different.” Also note that the body takes time to slough off dead skin, push out impurities, and soften fine lines. Generally four to six weeks is required after treatment to see the best results.
Depending on the goals you have for improving your skin’s youthfulness, multiple sessions may be necessary. Also wearing sunscreen daily with an SPF of 30 or higher is highly recommended and encouraged. By not protecting our skin from damaging UV rays, it is likely that new damage can occur. Once you have reached your goal, it is advisable to maintain your skin’s appearance by continuing with skin rejuvenation treatments once every six months to a year, again depending on your preferences.
The photo on the right was taken prior to treatment. The photo on the left was taken prior to the third treatment. These pictures represent before and after 2 treatments. Note the subtle differences around the forehead, eyes, lips, and chin. The skin tone appears much more even. Fine lines and wrinkles appear less noticeable. This is a good example of what to expect from our laser skin rejuvenation treatments.
It’s been all over the news for a few weeks now. The Army is tightening regulations on tattoos once again. In 2006, the policy on tattoos was relaxed to encourage recruitment. At that time, only “indecent, sexist, or racist” tattoos or tattoos on the face or head were banned. Now that the conflicts overseas are winding down, the Army is in essence “down-sizing” and thereby tightening restrictions on tattoos as well as overall grooming and appearance.
Sometime within the next month or two the new tattoo policy is expected to go into effect. This will mean that new recruits will not be allowed to have tattoos on their necks, head or face, or below their knees or elbows. Tattoos have been banned from soldiers’ necks since 2012. Current personnel will be “grandfathered in.” All soldiers will be required to “self-identify” their tattoos. Any tattoos found to be in violation of the policy that was in place at the time of their recruitment will be required to be removed at the soldier’s expense.
